15. Why does coffee cost so much? It's BEAN WATER. Water with some bean bits in it. Beany water. Aren't beans supposed to be one of the cheapest cash crops?

I always marvel at people who bitch about $3 a gallon for gasoline, but think absolutely nothing when plunking down what works out to be roughly $40 a gallon for a cup of coffee.
I sure as hell don't know how to refine crude oil in my home, but I can certainly figure out how to make my own latte before I leave the house.
Amen, sister!
And if you buy coffee from the steamroller of the espresso industry, the coffee now costs like $55+ a gallon, and still tastes burnt (i.e. like crappola).
Get a little $6.00 stovetop espresso brewer, and you'll feel guilty if you buy an espresso again ( that's one of the reasons why I usually get tea or just a cup of joe when we go out for coffee =] ), because you know how quick, easy and inexpensive it is to whip up a latte on the homefront.
Thank you, both of you, for doing the math for me—and so amusingly too! MAL thoroughly spoiled me on the joy of home-roasted, freshly ground coffee ... even my, er, darkest roastings didn't have that nasty S%*tbucks flavor. And he has an Aeropress, which isn't $6, but handy and quick for espresso making. Nice to know we can make better coffee items, and much less expensively too.
